He has spent over a decade fighting for Prince George's County in the State Capitol, serving in key leadership positions in both the House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate.<h4>A Tireless Advocate for His Constituents</h4>In the 2022 Democratic Primary, Alonzo T. Washington worked tirelessly to gain the trust and support of his District 22 constituents. Then a State Delegate, he enthusiastically toured every public school, hosted town hall meetings, and knocked on thousands of doors, to hear his constituents’ concerns firsthand. Through his grassroots efforts,&nbsp;Alonzo finished first out of the six&nbsp;candidates for the House—finishing in first place for the third consecutive primary election.&nbsp;As a member of the House of Delegates, Alonzo served&nbsp;in several leadership positions, including Vice Chair of the Ways and Means Committee, and Chair of the Education Subcommittee.&nbsp;He&nbsp;was the first black person, and first Prince Georgian to ever hold that position.In previous years, he has served as Deputy Majority Whip, First Vice Chair of the Prince George’s House Delegation, Chair of the House Election Law Subcommittee, Chair of the Prince George’s County Education Committee, and Chair of the Prince George’s County Law Enforcement Committee. Alonzo also served as Co-Chair of the Prince George’s County Police Reform Work Group, and was a member of the Kirwan Commission on Excellence and Innovation in Education during his tenure in the House.In January 2023, Alonzo was appointed to serve as State Senator – the first Black person to ever represent our District in the Maryland Senate. In this new role, Senator Washington fashioned his priorities to reduce poverty, promote a vibrant local economy, achieve greater accountability from our public schools, and close the student achievement gap. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee,&nbsp;Senator Washington&nbsp;has influenced the flow of resources towards better educational opportunities, a more equitable tax code, and a stronger climate for Maryland small businesses and startup companies to succeed.During his time in Annapolis, he has been a statewide leader on many key issues, including record funding for public schools through the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, free community college for PGCPS grads, significant police reform measures, historic tax relief for seniors, and securing $200 Million to relocate FBI headquarters to Prince George's County.<h4>Senator Washington is a Leader that Inspires</h4>Senator&nbsp;Washington is a life-long resident of Prince George’s County and a graduate of its public schools. The oldest of six children, he grew up under difficult circumstances which caused his family to be homeless for a short time; and to occasionally reside in some of the county’s most troubled neighborhoods. Raised by a strong single mother, who believed in the power of education, Senator Washington became the first member of his family to attend college. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.Since his election,&nbsp;Senator Washington has continued to work tirelessly to keep his constituents connected, informed and engaged with their community by hosting over 75 town halls. To&nbsp;keep the community informed during the COVID-19 pandemic, he partnered with community leaders to hold several virtual town halls on key ballot initiatives, voting access, education, and much more.&nbsp;To provide essential resources to one of the most distressed communities in District 22,&nbsp;Senator Washington has hosted his Annual Backpack and School Supply Giveaway, Coat Drives, Thanksgiving Meal Giveaways, and other community resource events.&nbsp;He has also sponsored several meal distributions and community resource drives across District 22.These experiences have allowed&nbsp;Senator Washington to become both a trusted and reliable member of the local community as well as an insightful political leader, poised to prepare Prince George’s County to tackle major initiatives, such as reforming&nbsp;our education system, ensuring consumer protections, and developing the Purple Line.Senator&nbsp;Washington has previously worked as Executive Director of CASA in Action, Chief of Staff on Prince George’s Council, and for the County Redevelopment Authority. Working with community stakeholders, residents, and government agencies, I will implement targeted strategies to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities while creating more walkable, vibrant communities. My plan includes the following key measures: 1. Enhanced Crosswalk Visibility: We will install high-visibility crosswalks with advanced safety features such as flashing beacons, raised crossings, and improved lighting to ensure pedestrians are seen, even in low-visibility conditions. 2. Sidewalk Expansion and Repairs: By investing in the construction of new sidewalks and the repair of existing ones, we will prioritize connectivity and accessibility, particularly near schools, bus stops, and commercial areas. 3. Traffic-Calming Measures: • Lower speed limits in residential neighborhoods to protect pedestrians and reduce crash severity. • Implement road diets by redesigning overly wide streets to decrease vehicle lanes and create safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. • Improve streetscapes on major roads to include better lighting, landscaping, and pedestrian buffers. 4. Automated Enforcement: Expanding speed cameras and other automated enforcement tools will help deter dangerous driving behaviors, especially in school zones and high-risk areas. 5. Increased Crossing Guard Presence: We will allocate resources to hire and train more crossing guards to enhance safety for children and families in school zones. 6. Public Safety Education Campaigns: Launching a robust countywide education initiative will encourage safe driving and walking practices, fostering a culture of mutual respect between pedestrians and drivers. By implementing these measures, we can ensure safer streets, protect lives, and promote walkable communities across Prince George’s County. This plan reflects my commitment to a holistic approach that prioritizes safety, equity, and sustainability.

He led efforts to ban ghost guns and strengthen penalties for illegal firearms, ensuring safer neighborhoods. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by schools and communities, he increased penalties for young offenders involved in car thefts or bringing weapons into schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the same time, Senator Washington has prioritized prevention and support. He championed mental health days for students, expanded the presence of behavioral health specialists in all schools, and established teen centers and job centers in five towns across Prince George’s County. These initiatives provide critical resources and opportunities for youth, addressing the factors that often lead to criminal behavior.As County Executive, Senator Washington will continue to reduce crime through accountability and investment in programs that uplift communities. Transforming Public Education

Senator Washington is a champion for small businesses and innovation. His leadership was instrumental in securing the FBI Headquarters in Greenbelt, protecting businesses along the Purple Line, and establishing the Maryland Aerospace and Technology Commission. Senator Alonzo Washington is committed to addressing the healthcare challenges facing Prince George’s County. Despite minor improvements, too many families continue to leave the county for healthcare services, even for routine or critical needs. Reports show the county is short over 100 physicians and lacks more than 200 hospital beds, leading to long emergency room wait times and delayed care.&nbsp;&nbsp;Maternal health outcomes for Black women in the county remain alarmingly poor, forcing many families to seek care and deliver their babies outside of Prince George’s County. GREENBELT, MD – Today, in front of 200 friends and supporters, Maryland State Senator Alonzo T. Washington (D-22) proudly announced his candidacy for Prince George's County Executive, with a clear mission to usher in a new era of leadership for our county. "Prince George's County deserves a new wave of leadership, starting at the top," said Senator Washington. "I’m ready to deliver on bold, forward-thinking ideas that will prioritize safer streets, better schools, and a thriving local economy."&nbsp; Senator Washington has represented the residents of District 22 in the Maryland General Assembly since 2012. SENATOR ALONZO T. WASHINGTON STRONGLY OPPOSES LEGISLATION TO&nbsp;DISMANTLE ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY IN&nbsp;PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEMGREENBELT, MD – Senator Alonzo T. Washington strongly opposes PG 504-25, a bill supported by the Prince George’s County Board of Education that seeks to move the Office of Integrity and Compliance (OIC) from the school system to county government. This proposal undermines accountability and transparency in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) and disrupts a critical safeguard for students and taxpayers.The OIC was established through HB 437 during the 2023 legislative session, which unanimously passed the General Assembly and was signed into law by Governor Wes Moore. This legislation ensures the OIC operates as an independent unit within PGCPS to oversee ethical governance and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse. PG 504-25 directly contradicts this intent and threatens to dismantle these protections.“This office is a cornerstone of our commitment to ensuring accountability, transparency, and ethical governance in Prince George’s County Public Schools,” said Senator Washington. “Dismantling the Office of Integrity and Compliance now would be a reckless betrayal of our students, parents, teachers, and taxpayers. We fought hard to establish this office because every child deserves a school system that operates with integrity and fairness. I will not stand by as attempts are made to weaken this critical safeguard. Protecting our schools means protecting the future of our community.”Frank Turner, the Integrity and Compliance Officer, has been diligently building the office to protect students and uphold ethical standards.
